The Elecbrakes VM1 Mounted Brake Controller is a game-changer for those towing multiple trailers, eliminating the need for individual brake controllers on each trailer. By mounting directly to your vehicle, it allows you to manage up to five customised braking profiles, each tailored to different trailers and driving conditions. The Dynamic Slope Compensation feature automatically adjusts braking based on terrain, offering smooth and controlled braking whether you’re heading uphill or downhill. Designed to work with any 12V or 24V vehicle and trailer setup, the VM1 is wired directly to your power source and trailer socket, supporting 1-3 brake axles with a capacity range of 750-4500kg ATM.
Built to withstand the elements, it’s IP67 rated for dust, water, and weather resistance, making it ideal for rough conditions. The controller’s Bluetooth wireless connectivity connects directly to your smartphone and works seamlessly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing for real-time diagnostics and control directly from your dashboard.
It’s compatible with Electric Over Hydraulic brake systems and can be mounted inside or outside the vehicle for ultimate flexibility.

VM1 vs EB2 – Which one should I choose?
Elecbrakes offers two top-tier options: the EB2 Trailer-Mounted Brake Controller and the VM1 Vehicle-Mounted Brake Controller. Both are designed with unique benefits to cater to your specific towing needs, whether you’re using multiple vehicles or trailers.
With the EB2 mounted on your trailer, any vehicle can tow it without needing a brake controller installed. On the other hand, the VM1 is installed in your vehicle, allowing you to tow multiple trailers with a single vehicle.
What’s included in the VM1 box?
- VM1 Electric Brake Controller.
- 1.5m wired leader.
Is Aux power required and where can I source this from?
VM1 requires a dedicated 25 Amp 12V DC, or 12 Amp 24V DC Auxiliary power circuit as its power source, utilising the brake light circuit as its trigger. VM1 supports up to 3 braked axles (24A output). It’s good practice to check for output of at least 10Vrms when sourcing auxiliary power. If a new Auxiliary circuit needs to be routed, power may be sourced from the tow vehicles battery or an ignition triggered fuse block. If using an existing power source, please ensure the amperage rating is suitable for installation if any other accessories are sharing this circuit.
Selecting a suitable mounting location
Preferably mounted to the rear of the vehicle in the boot area, rear quarter, ute tray, or vehicle underside, fastened with 4x self tapping screws (supplied). A practical location for the vehicle must be selected to allow the provided cable to reach auxiliary power supply and vehicle trailer socket wiring.
How to connect the VM1 to the Elecbrakes App
Once the VM1 is mounted, connect it to your smartphone via the Elecbrakes app for seamless control and customisation:
- Download the Elecbrakes app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
- Turn on your vehicle to activate the VM1. Ensure auxiliary power is available.
- Pair the VM1 with your phone by selecting your unit in the app’s device list.
- Follow the in-app prompts to configure and fine-tune your brake settings.
With the VM1 integrated into your vehicle, you can also access braking controls via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for in-dash control.
